Dino's Submission for Berkeley Humane Society Rescue Dog of the Year 2018

“They called me Spooky. I was eight months in 2006, when the man walked me into the noisy building tied to an old rope. Someone behind the desk asked, “Why are you bringing him here?” The large man in dirty jeans and boots replied, “Too many kids. Not enough time for the dog.”

The smells were terrible, the sounds were loud and the floor was difficult to walk on. I tried hard to get the attention of anyone by barking and jumping up to let them know that I was a really nice dog, but no one would come into my kennel to play with me, except for this one lady. She visited a couple of times.

One day one of the people put a paper on my kennel. I don't know what it said, but she kept saying, “I’m sorry.”  The next day another person came back, put another piece of paper on my kennel and said, “It is your lucky day!”

I remember being walked to another building. When I woke from a nap, my butt really hurt. The next day the same really nice woman came back, walked me out of the building to her car and said, “You need a new name. We will call you Sparky.”

One day we visited a place where dogs play and I met a nice woman and her dog named Scout. I really like them. After, she said, “I will see you soon, Sparky.”

Georgette put me in the car, and when we got out, there was a large building. We walked up some stairs and Georgette knocked on the door and there was this really nice woman and Scout again! This was my new home! After Georgette left, Jackie said to me, “I will change your name to Dino, after a great person named Dean Martin.” Now I had a new name, a new home, my own bed and leash and collar. No more cold and slippery floors in a large noisy building.

We started to do a whole bunch of really funs things and meeting a lot of new people and going to things that Jackie called dog shows. I learned to retrieve different objects, jumped over walls and followed tracks. It was so much fun. I love all my dog friends at home, and I even love the cat!
